There has been mounting speculation that Greece's economic woes will cause a breakup in the eurozone, the group of countries that share the euro as their currency. Like elections and sporting events, the online markets allow people to place bets on the likelihood that this will happen, giving us a means of predicting the odds.
Presently, the markets place an 83 percent likelihood on the odds that a country leaves the eurozone by 2015, adopting its own currency instead. Greece is the most likely country to cause this breakup, with Italy ranking a distant second:

The reason observers are so confident that Greece will leave the eurozone is easy to explain.
The European Union and the International Monetary Fund have demanded that Greece adopt severe austerity measures as a condition for staying in the eurozone. The current government has implemented them, a move that correlates with Greece moving ever deeper into recession. Unemployment in the country is edging above 20 percent. Now more than a quarter of Greeks consider themselves "suffering."
According to the latest rumors, Greece will hold a parliamentary election in May. The current government, a coalition between the Socialist Movement and the conservative New Democracy party, is likely to lose its majority given such widespread displeasure with its policies. The coalition parties are expected to loose nearly half of their seats, giving them 47 percent, down from 84 percent of the parliament.
Likely Outcome of Greece Elections
As no other party supports the austerity plan, forecasters are skeptical that any new Greek coalition will stick to further painful spending cuts and reforms after the election. Thus, the new coalition is likely to either pull out of the eurozone or be kicked out.
If Greece is overwhelmingly likely to vote for a new coalition that will force the country off the euro, why do the markets predict just a 41 percent chance that they will abandon the euro this year? The reason is probably that there is no formal mechanism that would enable eurozone members to leave the group. Moreover, various analysts have pointed out that it is hard for logistical reasons for any country to leave the euro. The difference in those odds is a reflection of the logistical reality, not just the political reality. The beauty of markets is that they can consider both.
ROMNEY ON OLYMPIC BODYBOARDING TEAM!
Mitt Romney, will be competing in the Olympics in London this summer – on the U.S. Bodyboarding Team.
Republican candidate for President, Mitt Romeny, got some good news over the weekend. He’s officially made the U.S. Bodyboarding Team and will be competing this summer in the London 2012 Olympics.
How can Mitt compete in the Olympics and run for President at the same time?
“No problem, for Mitt. He’s wrapped up the Republican nomination and he will only have to be in London for one week. He can do it all,” said Romney’s senior campaign adviser, Eric Fehrnstrom. ”He’s like an etch-a-sketch. He can be a candidate one minute, then you shake him up and he’s an Olympics athlete.”
Barack Obama was not impressed with Romney’s selection to the team. ”I’ve been a pretty damn good bodyboarder my whole life. Besides, I look better in a bathing suit than Mitt,” the President reportedly said.
Mitt Romney had no response to the President. He was busy in La Jolla, California this weekend, working out with his bodyboard:
This is the first year that “bodyboarding” is an Olympic sport. Romney plan on “taking home the gold” and then “hanging it the wall in the White House in January.”
He carried the torch then, and plans to carry the torch in London.
Romney is known in “bodyboarding” circles as Mr. Steady. ”The guy never falls off. It’s a miracle. No matter how hard a wave crashes on him, he never lets go of his board.”
Romney will not be the only politician competing in Olympic Bodyboarding. Vladimir Putin will be on the Russian team.
WORST CHEAP SHOT IN SPORTS HISTORY!
It’s the cheap shot heard ’round the world.
The video was shot during an Arizona college baseball game between the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes and the Yavapai College Roughriders on March 29.
It begins innocently enough, with a sacrifice bunt from a Scottsdale player that drives in a run.
But off screen, some sort of conflict develops between the teams, and a bench-clearing brawl ensues.
As the umpires try to break up the fight, Yavapai outfielder Austin O’Such can suddenly be seen charging from left field before laying out Jake Bamrick, a Scottsdale infielder standing on second base, who didn’t even see O’Such coming.
The force of the hit knocked off Bamrick’s batting helmet and left him lying flat on the infield dirt – where a team trainer was eventually able to help him back to his feet.
On Saturday, Yavapai College Athletic Director Scott Farnsworth released the following statement through the college’s website:
He said: ‘Yavapai College and the Athletic Department aspire to the ideals of good sportsmanship and fair play. In no way do we condone the behavior as recorded in the video, which occurred on March 29, 2012 at the Yavapai versus Scottsdale Community College baseball game.
‘The YC player involved was immediately suspended by the college and will be suspended from play for the rest of the season. The college has implemented this action and will continue to work with the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) on current and future sanctions following conference procedures. Per conference rules team members from both teams involved in the on field incident have already served their suspensions’. O’Such’s player bio has since been removed from the Yavapai baseball page.
The incident has also sparked furor among users on social networking sites.
Amid the onslaught of anger against O’Such, he shut down his Twitter account, which included such recent tweets as ‘I think it’s beat down season’.
In addition, a group called ‘Ban Austin O’Such from League’ has sprung up on Facebook.
As for the game, the Artichokes wound up coming back from a 6-0 deficit to capture a 10-8 victory over the RoughRiders.
